The Focus Features release showcases an original musical score by award-winning composer Danny Elfman (Spider-Man, Big Fish); the CD soundtrack will be in stores Tuesday, November 25th on Decca.

In 1977, Harvey Milk was elected to the San Francisco Board of Supervisors, becoming the first openly gay man to be voted into major public office in America. His victory was not just a victory for gay rights; he forged coalitions across the political spectrum. From senior citizens to union workers, Harvey Milk changed the very nature of what it means to be a fighter for human rights and became, before his untimely death in 1978, a hero for all Americans. Academy Award® winner Sean Penn stars as Harvey Milk under the direction of Academy Award® nominee Gus Van Sant in Milk, filmed on location in San Francisco from an original screenplay by Dustin Lance Black, and produced by Academy Award® winners Dan Jinks and Bruce Cohen.

The Milk soundtrack showcases another shining example of composer Elfman’s musical talent, as his score mirrors every aspect of the politician’s life as the story progresses through the final eight years of Milk’s life. Similarly, the song selections – including music by Sly & The Family Stone, David Bowie, The Swingle Singers and The Hues Corporation – range from upbeat dance anthems to melancholy ballads that prefigure Milk’s premature fate.

Decca is proud to release the soundtrack for one of the year’s most highly anticipated movies, Milk. While certainly appearing/sounding young, the melancholy nature of nearly all of his songs is going to fly over the heads (and cares) of all the little girls who worship these singer songwriter types, but it’s striking older women right in the heart, and earning him legions of fans among them.

The Day is Brave is the kind of album that you could blindly pluck any song from it, and drop it right into any TV drama (this stuff SCREAMS Dawson’s Creek) and it’s going to go over like gangbusters. The same goes for any coffee shop, romantic comedy film, Christmas tree lighting ceremony, etc. I can’t see a lot of it succeeding on the radio, but who listens to the radio anymore anyway?

The track “The Other Side” delightfully strays from the flock; it’s slightly similar to Elliott Smith’s later work. The rest of the album is a bit heavy-handed, but so is the entire singer/songwriter genre, and to James’ credit, his songs are better than 99% of what’s currently out there.

Brendan James comes across like a little more accessible, less snooty Josh Grobin. James is singing with Carly Simon, Grobin’s singing with Celine Dion. There’s a sticker on the front of The Day is Brave with a quote from Carly Simon, proclaiming that James’ voice will “change the world.” Lofty praise indeed, but what I imagine is sadly going through millions of heads that may read that sticker, is “Who’s Carly Simon?”
- Noel Wurst

Concert Review: Boz Scaggs delivers in Jazz Alley set, from blues to Broadway | Boz Scaggs | News

Chances are you have never heard the Boz Scaggs song "Harbor Lights" the way it is being played at Jazz Alley, where Scaggs is drawing sold-crowds in a rare local club date through Sunday night.

"Harbor Lights," a popular tune from Scaggs' hit 1976 album "Silk Degrees," is introduced here with a pensive accordion solo by Gil Goldstein, the excellent keyboard player-arranger who heads up Scaggs' current touring band.

Boz soon chimes in on voice and acoustic guitar, and then reed man Paul McCandless (formerly of the group Oregon) contributes a terrific solo. On penny whistle.

Stripped of the initial recording's electric piano and wash of 1970s pop slickness, "Harbor Lights" is almost completely remade. And in this stripped-down, French-flavored version you get closer to the interesting chord changes and heartfelt lyric.

Judging by his satisfying and adventuresome Jazz Alley set, and by his recent albums of jazz standards (including the new "Speak Low," now out on the Decca label), Scaggs has reinvented himself musically once again. But what has remained constant about this thoughtful singer-guitarist, in all his musical phases — from his fertile 1960s tenure with the Steve Miller Blues Band, to his more homogenized middle-of-the-road 1970s pop period, to his current diversity of styles — is that supple singing voice that is pure Boz.

The lanky Texas native's high baritone has an unusual timbre, a tender soulfulness with a pinch of grit. His phrasing is impeccable, tapered and nuanced with great care.

Looking and sounding great in his mid-60s, Scaggs covers a blues-to-Broadway batch of tunes at Jazz Alley. And he's clearly enjoying his gently swinging sidemen, including McCandless and horn player Bob Sheppard.

The layered instrumental sound here is reminiscent of the "cool jazz" charts on late 1950s recordings by such leading horn hipsters as Stan Getz and Gerry Mulligan. Whether he's crooning one of his own oldies like "We're All Alone," or an enduring show tune like Kurt Weill's seductive "Speak Low," Scaggs and company roll each tune out on a beautiful sonic carpet.

True, bossa nova may not be Boz's strongest suit — as his tepid cover of Antonio Carlos Jobim's "Dindi" suggests. And on occasion, longtime backup singer Monet Owens nearly drowns Scaggs out, as she strains for high-pitched, flashy effects that seem contrary to his more subtle style.

Otherwise, Scaggs is in excellent form, and still exploring musically.

But for those who fondly recall his early bluesy days, the highlight of Friday night's second set had to be "Save Your Love for Me." That smoky blues fits Scaggs like a pair of lean jeans. And his ringing guitar riffs (from the less-is-more school of B.B. King) are a pleasure.

-Misha Berson

and while it might appear that Boz Scaggs has taken up residence - this
is his second straight album in the form, following 2003's "But
Beautiful" - the singer has suggested in recent interviews that his
stay will not be permanent. While he's here, though, he seems to be
making the most of it: "But Beautiful" topped the jazz charts, and with
his new release he again proves himself an able and careful interpreter
of this music while exhibiting a voice that has retained its
distinctive velvety rasp even as its timbre has naturally thickened
with time. Scaggs renders material from the likes of Rodgers and Hart
("She Was Too Good to Me"), Hoagy Carmichael ("Skylark"), and Duke
Ellington ("Do Nothing Till You Hear From Me"), as a series of
intimate, moody ballads, with occasional diversions into mid-tempo
swing ("Senza Fine") and bossa beat ("Dindi"). His deft, small-combo
backing is changed up a bit this time to fine effect, with vibes and
clarinet woven in among the sax and piano and, here and there, touches
of strings. "Speak Low" is an elegant and striking return visit.
- Boston Globe Review - Stuart Munro

There are few artists who have jumped genres as naturally as Boz
Scaggs. While some still think of him as a blues guitarist and others
only know "Silk Degrees," I've followed Boz Scaggs for a long time,
anticipating each new venture. He hasn't disappointed me yet. "Speak
Low" is a noteworthy addition to an already prodigious catalogue.
- Huffingtonpost.com - Sal Nunziato

Blue-eyed soulman Boz Scaggs went the standards route on his
'03 album "But Beautiful," and he stays on that road with "Speak Low"
(***, out Tuesday on Decca). His low-key but expressive singing is a
good fit on Rodgers and Hart's "She Was Too Good to Me" -- his
rendition a tip-of-the-hat to Chet Baker's indelible version. Also
notable is his moving take of the autumnal "Ballad of the Sad Young
Men."

Sure, everyone from Linda Ronstadt to Rod Stewart to Cyndi
Lauper has taken a swing at an album of standards, but this one is
better than most, with orchestrations as subtle as Scaggs' own voice. - Detroit Free Press - Martin Bandyke

Tracks
1. Invitation
2. She Was Too Good To Me
3. His "Tenor Madness" solo from Japan in 2000 is one of Rollins's most compelling recorded blues statements. There's a remarkable "Easy Living" from Poland in 1980. "More Than You Know," recorded in France in 2006, concludes with a ravishing extended cadenza that is a tour through the inner workings of a great melodist's creative process. The most recent track, "Some Enchanted Evening," from Rollins's 2007 Carnegie Hall concert, is curiously tentative despite the presence of bassist Christian McBride and drummer Roy Haynes. The architectonic "Blossoms," from Sweden in 1980, is anything but tentative. Full of risk-taking, it is twelve-and-a-half minutes of Rollins at his most penetrating and complex.

Tracks
1. Best Wishes
2. More Than You Know
3. Blossom
4.

San Francisco
Chronicle - By Jesse Hamlin

Boz Scaggs was strolling by the Blue Note in
New York one rainy winter night when the sound he'd been hearing in his
head - an airy mix of strings, vibes, reeds and horns - came wafting
from the Greenwich Village club.

"It was magic," says Scaggs, a far-reaching musician known for his
taste and integrity. He wanted to sing amid those orchestral colors on
the record he was mulling as a follow-up to 2003's "But Beautiful" -
his first foray into the harmonically rich world of standards - but was
searching for the right arranger to shape the ethereal sound he was
after. "I thought, 'Ah, this is it.' "

It turned out be a nonet led by Gil Goldstein, the arranger and
pianist who'd apprenticed with master colorist Gil Evans. Scaggs had
loved the lean, artful charts Goldstein wrote for the San Francisco
Jazz Collective and saxophonist Michael Brecker. Meeting that night, he
and the arranger began the collaboration that brought forth "Speak
Low," a lovely set of classics and lesser-known gems that comes out
Tuesday on Decca.

Scaggs sings these old songs with natural grace and feeling,
phrasing through floating webs of sound woven with bass flutes, harp,
marimba, saxophone, piano, percussion, bass clarinet and string quartet.

He will serve up some of that repertoire - which ranges from
standards such as "Skylark" to the bluesy "Save Your Love for Me" and
the lilting Jobim bossa nova "Dindi" - at the Napa Valley Opera House
on Tuesday night, the first stop on a national tour. But he'll mix it
up with the music for which he's best known: rhythm and blues, his
first love, and some of his stylish 1970s pop radio hits like "Lowdown"
and "We're All Alone," freshly arranged by Goldstein.

The pianist, who doubles on accordion, will lead a band featuring
multi-reedmen Bob Sheppard and Paul McCandless, bassist Steve Rodby,
drummer Richie Morales and the female singer Monet, from Scaggs' hits
band.

Because most of the songs on the new CD are ballads, "we gotta give
the show a little juice. It's gotta have some energy," Scaggs says.
He's sitting in his South of Market studio, wearing a white dress
shirt, black trousers and a very trim goatee. That's where he and
Goldstein chose and shaped the material. They played and sang duets at
the Steinway grand with a spontaneous feeling they tried to bring to
the record.

"What we wanted to come out of this was the real, pure joy of just
sitting here going over these songs, just feeling our way in the dark,
as it were, and trying to find where we met musically," says Scaggs,
64, a thoughtful, soft-spoken man who takes his time making records and
choosing his words.

"There was a stillness that was alive. The music barely moved, but
it worked. We wanted the music to come out of that stillness, out of
silence, and we didn't want to break that spell. And that's the feeling
that I still get when I listen to it."
